SHIPLEY’S CHOICE BATH AND CLOSET REMODEL

I met Maria & Dave P at the Shipley’s Choice Elementary School Fun Run where I had donated a $1,000 gift certificate to be auctioned off during their annual event. Maria was the winning bidder, and after she won, we spoke on several occasions to discuss several home improvement projects that we could do. They had been in their home (which was built in the 80s) for several years now, and it was in desperate need of a general freshening up. After much deliberation, they decided to focus on their Master Bath and Closet area.

The closet, due to the rooflines, was a very odd shape, and as a result did not allow for much storage space. It also had several bypass doors that made an already small room seem even smaller. It was connected to their bathroom, which though functional, was still the original bath from 25 years ago.

Thanks to inspiration from several pictures from houzz.com, we were able to come up with a great idea for closet that involved following the slope of the roof with shelves for shoes (of which she had a few!). This not only provided great storage space, but also a really neat design feature for the closet. We also decided to remove all the interior partition walls of the closet to make the area look and feel larger. There was an active dormer just outside of the closet that had little functional use, so we converted that into a closet as well. This gave them the extra square footage that they desperately needed without encroaching into their bedroom. Finally, we added a built-in drawer/shelf unit that matched the shoe built-ins, and allowed for even more storage.

In their bathroom, we kept the original tub that they really liked; however, we redid the shower walls and shower configuration. By adding a separate hand held showerhead on it’s own control, they now have the ability to use two showerheads at the same time. We also removed the linen closet located in the master bath and moved it into the closet, giving them a larger counter area.

This was a really fun project for us. Not only did we get to meet and work with some really fantastic folks, but we also got to exercise our creative juices on how to best utilize unusual spaces. The project turned out great and they couldn’t be happier with their new spaces!
